Description
An illustration of Geneva Switzerland's old city as it appeared in 1841. Like many cities in France, Italy, Spain and Norway during this period Geneva built star-shaped fortifications around its city, also known as bastion forts, to defend against siege armies using cannons. The geometry and structure of the fortifications helped limit the effectiveness of cannon fire, and the ability of attacking armies to approach and find cover against a defending cities walls.
