Artist's Description

A replica pioneer wagon at Pipe Springs National Historic Monument. Located on the modern day Kaibab Paiute Indian Reservation, Pipe Springs was first encountered by the European explorer Antonio Armijo during his 1829–1830 expedition between Abiquiu, New Mexico, and Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, in San Gabriel, California. His pioneering route would become known as the Armijo Route of the Old Spanish Trail.

Pipe Springs would eventually be named by Jacob Hamblin, during a Mormon missionary expedition to the area in 1858. A group of Mormon pioneers soon followed in the 1860's establishing a cattle operation in the area. Following the Black Hawk Wars,and Indian raids on Pipe Springs during the conflict, the fort visitors see today was established to protect the springs. The Fort was eventually acquired by Brigham Young, the leader of the Mormon Church, and it remained under Church ownership until 1895.
