Artist's Description
The moat of Lichtenstein Castle, in Baden-Wuttermberg, Germany, as seen outside the main gate. The castle was built between 1840-42, by Duke Wilhelm of Urach, Count of Wurttemberg. The neo-gothic design of the castle was conceived by architect Carl Alexander Heideloff, and follows two previous castles constructed in the middle ages, and destroyed in local warfare.
Pictured is the moat and defensive wall one encounters at the entrance to Lichtenstein Castle. The cloudiness of this day made for an interesting photograph that brought out the deep greens in the grass, but also gave a dark foreboding feel to the place.
Lichtenstein is a German castle located on the edge of the Swabian Alps, not far from the town of Reutlingen. It’s of relatively recent construction, built in the 1840’s by Count Wilhelm of Württemberg, based on a Gothic Revival design. It was inspired by Wilhelm Hauff’s popular novel “Lichtenstein“ which offered a romanticized account of his predeces...
